Reuters reported Friday that U.S. banking regulators are stepping up scrutiny of how lenders deploy AI, pressing firms on everything from data access and governance controls to risks posed by third-party vendors. The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency and the Federal Reserve have, in routine bank examinations, begun asking banks to map out how they deploy the technology. Supervisors are focusing on human oversight and "kill switches" that allow firms to shut down systems if necessary, as well as clarity on who has authority to intervene. A central concern is ensuring AI systems don't exceed what they're meant to do or access, with regulators probing whether tools can infer data beyond authorized limits.

The kill-switch ask is the most consequential of the four: it forces banks to identify, in writing, a single human authorized to halt each model — which most production deployments cannot answer today because the model is one node in a multi-vendor pipeline nobody owns end-to-end. Vendor-risk scrutiny is the second teeth: every "AI-powered" SaaS contract a bank signed in the last 18 months is now subject to a supervisory question the bank cannot answer without the vendor's cooperation, and the vendor's incentive to provide it is mixed.
