GitHub moved Agentic Workflows to public preview Thursday, letting teams automate reasoning-based tasks like issue triage, CI failure analysis, and documentation updates by leveraging coding agents inside GitHub Actions. The update lets Agentic Workflows use Actions' built-in GITHUB_TOKEN, removing the need to create and manage a personal access token for the feature. GitHub cited Carvana and Marks & Spencer among early users; Marks & Spencer said it has built a catalogue of reusable workflows spanning security, quality, and delivery. Workflows can run on Copilot CLI, Claude Code, or OpenAI Codex depending on configuration.

The interesting thing here isn't the feature — it's the engine-agnostic posture. GitHub is positioning Actions as the orchestration layer above whichever frontier model wins the week, and the PAT-removal change is the tell: friction that small enough to matter only if you expect mass adoption inside enterprise repos that previously rejected agent pilots on credential-management grounds. The risk practitioners should price is not "agent writes bad code" — the safe-outputs gate handles that — it's agentic workflow injection, where untrusted issue text or PR comments steer the agent's downstream actions. Treat agentic workflows as a new attack surface, not just a productivity feature.
