OpenAI announced it will acquire Ona, bringing its secure cloud execution and orchestration technology into the Codex ecosystem. Ona's customer-controlled execution model will let agents operate inside an organization's own cloud environment while OpenAI provides the intelligence and orchestration, giving organizations control over infrastructure, data, and security boundaries. Ona is OpenAI buying the runway, not the airplane. The intelligence layer is the part OpenAI has — what it was missing was a secure, persistent place for those agents to keep working after the developer closes the laptop, and that gap is the actual product question for every enterprise pilot stuck in security review. The strategic move worth naming: by acquiring a customer-controlled execution layer rather than building one on Azure, OpenAI is decoupling its agent runtime from its primary cloud partner — which gives it a cleaner story for banks and pharma buyers who can't have their regulated data sitting next to a Microsoft tenant.
