DeepSeek, the Chinese AI startup that dominated headlines last year, has raised more than $7.4 billion (50 billion yuan) in its first funding round; first reported by The Information, the round means DeepSeek is valued at more than $50 billion , per Capacity. Reuters earlier reported the round at about 50 billion yuan ($7.4 billion) from investors including Tencent Holdings and CATL, valuing the company at between $52 billion and $59 billion , per Yahoo Finance. The financing structure required investors to put their capital into a limited partnership managed by CEO Liang Wenfeng, enabling him to retain absolute control; a five-year lockup has reportedly been imposed on all investor shares, with the exception of China's National Artificial Intelligence Industry Investment Fund, which invested directly and retained voting rights . The round was initially flagged in early June; The Information's reporting today confirms it has closed.

Watch For

A second European or Middle East enterprise (after the Saudi PIF and Mistral-government deals already in market) naming DeepSeek V4 or V5 as its production model of record before September. If it happens, the sovereign-AI vendor shortlist has effectively three names — OpenAI, Anthropic for US, DeepSeek for everyone else — and your procurement frameworks should treat it that way.
