The US government, citing national security authorities, issued an export control directive to suspend all access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 by any foreign national, whether inside or outside the United States, including foreign national Anthropic employees; the net effect is that Anthropic must abruptly disable Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for all customers to ensure compliance , per Anthropic's statement. Anthropic received a letter from the Commerce Department saying its Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models were banned for use by any foreign national "inside or outside the United States," due to national security concerns , Fox Business reported Sunday. Senior Anthropic staffers met with Trump administration officials in Washington on Monday to try to resolve the dispute , per CNBC. Anthropic says it has not even received disclosure of a concerning non-universal jailbreak that led to a harmful result; the government has only given verbal evidence of a potential narrow, non-universal jailbreak, which essentially consists of asking the model to read a specific codebase and fix any software flaws .

This is the first time the US government has used export-control authority to take a live frontier model offline globally, and the precedent it sets is bigger than the dispute. Every enterprise contract that names a specific Anthropic model is now subject to a sovereign override clause that wasn't in the SLA. The framing some vendors will push — "this proves you need a sovereign or multi-model fallback" — is half right and half self-serving: the deeper lesson is that frontier-model availability is no longer a vendor risk, it's a policy risk, and the controls that bite hardest are the ones written for chip exports being applied to model weights and inference endpoints.
