SpaceX said on Tuesday it would acquire Anysphere, the software firm behind the AI coding agent Cursor, for $60 billion, in a bid to ramp up its presence in the enterprise AI market , per Reuters via CNBC. The deal is all-stock through SpaceX subsidiary X67 Inc.; the transaction is expected to close in the third quarter of 2026, subject to regulatory approvals , according to the SEC filing. SpaceX had said in April it secured an option to either acquire the San Francisco-based company for $60 billion later this year, or pay $10 billion for a new partnership — it chose to buy. The deal gives xAI, which SpaceX merged with in February and is known for the Grok chatbot, its first major entry into AI developer tools, where it has trailed Microsoft, Anthropic, and Google .

This isn't an AI deal; it's a compute-and-distribution deal that happens to come with a coding agent attached. Reuters notes SpaceX recently struck deals with Anthropic and Google to lease cloud computing capacity worth roughly $26 billion combined annually, both with 90-day termination clauses — meaning Musk just bought the front-end (Cursor's ~$4B annualized revenue, the most-used coding agent in the world) for the entity that already controls a Grok-class frontier model and is renting its inference from rivals on a 90-day leash. Three months from now those leases get renegotiated against an in-house developer-tool customer with $2.6B of enterprise B2B revenue running on them. The strategic question for every enterprise buyer with a Cursor contract isn't "will pricing change" — it's whether the model Cursor routes to in 2027 is still Claude or GPT, or quietly becomes Grok.
