Microsoft returns to San Francisco for Build 2026 today at Fort Mason Center, with the developer conference focused on one thing: agents, kicked off with Satya Nadella's "no fluff" keynote at 9:30 a.m. PT. Nadella said on Microsoft's latest earnings call that "Agent Mode is now the default mode across several Office 365 Copilot products, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint," describing the company's shift to "async coworkers that can execute long-running tasks across key domains." Microsoft Agent 365, the enterprise control plane for AI agents, reached general availability on May 1, 2026, and Build is expected to expand on that foundation.

Flipping Agent Mode from opt-in to default inside Word, Excel and PowerPoint is the single most consequential governance event of the quarter, and almost no IT organization is staffed for it. Agent Mode as the default moves AI from reactive assistance toward delegated work inside everyday business documents, and Agent 365 is positioned as the enterprise governance layer for discovering, managing, and securing agents before they become another form of shadow IT. The catch is that "default on" plus "enterprise control plane" is two products being sold simultaneously to the same buyer — admins who don't license Agent 365 will discover Agent Mode is already running in their tenant. The practical question for customers is whether Agent 365 becomes a meaningful safety layer or another premium SKU required to make the rest of the stack tolerable. Microsoft has built a flywheel where the more agentic work lands in M365, the more Agent 365 looks like a baseline expense rather than an upsell.

Watch For

A second Fortune 500 publicly disclosing that it discovered unmanaged Office 365 agents in its tenant before Q3 2026. If it happens, expect the first wave of CIO-level mandates pausing Agent Mode at the tenant level — and a corresponding spike in Agent 365 seat adds. If it doesn't, Microsoft's "governance ships with the default" pitch holds, and competitors (Salesforce Agent Fabric, ServiceNow AI Control Tower) lose the wedge.
