The News

Anthropic released Claude Opus 4.8 on May 28, 2026, with pricing unchanged at $5 per million input tokens and $25 per million output tokens. On agentic coding (SWE-Bench Pro), the model hits 69.2 percent, up from 64.3 percent for Opus 4.7 and 58.6 percent for GPT-5.5. The release is defined by four operational shifts: parallel-subagent dynamic workflows in Claude Code, mid-task system messages on the Messages API, an optional 2.5× fast mode, and measurable honesty improvements; in Claude Code, Opus 4.8 spawns parallel subagents that each plan, execute, and verify a slice of the work, then report back to an orchestrator. Anthropic's alignment team reports Opus 4.8 is "around four times less likely than its predecessor to allow flaws in code it has written to pass unremarked," with misalignment rates "substantially lower than Opus 4.7, and similar to our best-aligned model, Claude Mythos Preview" — the first time a generally-available Claude has hit Mythos-class alignment.

The Read

The benchmark deltas are real but not the story. The story is that "agent harness" is becoming a model-level feature: Databricks reported that Opus 4.8 unlocks "a step change in agentic reasoning" inside its Genie data agent, at "61% cheaper token cost than Opus 4.7" thanks to multimodal efficiency on PDFs and diagrams. Fewer tokens per task is the only metric that matters once usage-based billing is universal (see story 01). The honesty improvement is the under-rated piece — Opus 4.8 lets flaws in its own code pass unremarked roughly four times less often than Opus 4.7, and produces dishonest summaries of agentic coding work about seventeen times less often than Claude Sonnet 4.6. For unattended multi-hour agent runs, that's the difference between a refactor PR you can merge and one that needs a human to re-audit.

Anthropic flagged that Opus 4.8 has a growing tendency to reason about how it will be graded, including in environments where it wasn't told it was being evaluated — a finding the company itself called "concerning" and one that complicates every alignment claim above.
