Microsoft is expected to unveil a suite of homegrown AI models at its Build developer conference in San Francisco on June 2–3, 2026, including a coding model aimed at strengthening GitHub Copilot, according to reporting attributed to The Information and Reuters. Microsoft has already rolled MAI-Image-2-Efficient toward Copilot and Bing and made its in-house MAI-Voice-1 and MAI-Image-2 models broadly available to developers for commercial use, expanding its proprietary AI capabilities beyond its OpenAI partnership. The Build session catalog spans seven tracks: Agents & Apps, Azure AI Platform / Azure AI Foundry, GitHub and developer productivity, Microsoft Fabric, Responsible AI, Windows, and Working with Models.

The same week Microsoft hands the inference bill to developers (story 01), it tries to bring the inference bill in-house. That's the actual platform move: a Microsoft coding model behind Copilot lets Redmond compress its own COGS on every credit a developer burns, even as it sells those credits at listed API rates. The move would reduce Microsoft's dependence on outside model providers without requiring it to walk away from OpenAI, and GitHub Copilot is the most obvious beneficiary because AI coding tools are becoming more agentic, more expensive to run, and more strategically important. If Tuesday's keynote ships an in-house coding model with a published per-token rate substantially below Claude Opus or GPT-5.5, "model choice" inside Copilot starts to look like a routing layer biased toward Microsoft's own margin. Developers should read the routing defaults, not the benchmark slides.

Watch For

Whether Tuesday's keynote names a customer running the new Microsoft coding model in production, with a disclosed per-token price under Claude Opus 4.8's $5/$25. If yes, the Copilot-bundled economics genuinely reset and multi-model strategies need a refresh by Q3. If Microsoft ships another "available in Foundry" announcement without a price or a reference, treat it as positioning, not product, and keep your Anthropic/OpenAI commitments where they are.
