All GitHub Copilot plans transition to usage-based billing on June 1, 2026; instead of counting premium requests, every Copilot plan now includes a monthly allotment of GitHub AI Credits, with paid plans able to purchase more, and usage is calculated based on token consumption — input, output, and cached — at listed API rates per model. TechCrunch reported on May 30 that the switch from a flat subscription rate to a token-usage system has the potential to bill users at a significantly higher rate, with smaller companies wondering how to balance the monthly budget; some developers on Reddit and X reported drastic escalations in cost. One Reddit user claimed expenses would rise from around $29 to nearly $750 monthly; another said costs could go from roughly $50 to about $3,000.

This is the day the AI-coding subscription stopped looking like a SaaS line item and started looking like a cloud bill. The mechanism matters: code completions remain unlimited and don't consume AI Credits, but the fallback experience is gone — users who exhaust credits will no longer be silently downgraded to a cheaper model, and usage is now governed by available credits and admin budget controls. That removes the one safety valve that made power-user behavior survivable. A single agentic coding session can consume $30 to $40, which means a Pro user with $10 per month in credits hits their ceiling in a single working session — and that's the user GitHub spent eighteen months teaching to invoke an agent for every task. The forced lesson is that "flat-rate agent access" was never a product; it was a marketing window the model providers held open while they figured out the unit economics.
