Stainless's customer list is the punchline — it sells SDK-generation tooling to all three frontier labs. Anthropic buying it is less an acquisition than a denial-of-supply move: pay $300M+ to make sure your two biggest competitors don't get to keep using the same plumbing you do. Stainless may simply have hit the natural ceiling for a SDK-generation tool with three customers, and a $300M outcome for that team is a rational exit, not a strategic chess move.

Watch For

A second frontier lab announcing an acquisition of a "neutral" tools or infra vendor that sells to multiple labs, within 60 days. If it happens, the multi-vendor enterprise AI strategy needs to be rewritten assuming the lab you pick will eventually own the rails too. If it doesn't, Stainless is a one-off and the multi-vendor thesis still holds for at least another quarter.
