Within two weeks of Meta's Muse launch, retailers split into three camps on AI shopping agents: Amazon blocked, Walmart/Best Buy/Gap/Sephora/Wayfair partnered, and Shopify opened checkout to any browser-based agent.

What it means

Agent access is now a commercial choice, not a technical default. Brands reliant on paid-search and merchandising — Amazon, airlines, loyalty retailers — will throttle; merchant-monetizing platforms (Shopify, QVC) will welcome. Map every destination before an agent-first customer tests it for you.

Broadcom lends Anthropic the money to buy Broadcom's chips. Anthropic warns investors Washington can detach its customers. Retailers decide which agents walk through the door. California decides which AI decisions a boss can make alone. The platform-share shift is the market reacting to all of it in real time. The near-term bet that is working: owning a chokepoint — compute financing, checkout, regulatory template, distribution. The bet that isn't: assuming any of these are still contestable in six months.
