What happened

Indian customer engagement software firm MoEngage acquired San Francisco-based startup Aampe in an all-cash deal, gaining technology that assigns AI agents to individual customers , per TechCrunch. Terms were not disclosed, but a source familiar with the transaction told TechCrunch the deal was worth tens of millions of dollars. Aampe's agents are already in production at Grab, Swiggy, ZenBusiness, and Taxfix, where the platform runs hundreds of millions of dedicated AI agents and processes more than 200 billion decisions every week .

What it means

Per-customer agents kill the segment as the unit of marketing — what survives is content, goals, and guardrails set by humans, with timing, channel, and frequency delegated to the agent. The economics MoEngage is buying are compounding learning per user, which is what makes this different from "AI-assisted campaign tooling" repackaged. The risk is symmetric: a system can become a faster way to annoy people if brands measure only clicks and conversions; a system making hundreds of billions of weekly decisions needs discipline around frequency, consent and customer fatigue, and you don't build trust by automating bad judgment . CMOs evaluating Braze, Iterable, or Salesforce Marketing Cloud now have an obvious yardstick: does the platform decide per user, or per segment.
