Anthropic on Tuesday launched Claude Fable 5, a Mythos-class model whose capabilities exceed those of any model the company has made generally available , alongside a restricted Mythos 5 release through Project Glasswing. Fable 5 and Mythos 5 are priced at $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens — less than half the price of Claude Mythos Preview , though TechCrunch reported the rate is double Opus 4.8 . Anthropic ships safety classifiers that route some queries to Opus 4.8 instead, tuned conservatively but triggering in less than 5% of sessions on average . Anthropic just collapsed its own product hierarchy: Opus is no longer the top tier, Mythos-class is, and the company stapled a fallback model to the launch as the price of shipping it broadly. The interesting mechanism isn't the benchmark sheet — it's the routing. Fable is a single product that silently downshifts to a weaker model in cybersecurity and biology queries, which means every enterprise integration now has to handle two different model behaviors behind one API call. The mandatory 30-day data retention on all traffic — including for customers who previously had zero-retention agreements — is the other shoe : the price of frontier capability is now a data-retention floor that legal teams negotiated away last year. The Stripe and Rakuten anecdotes are real, but the Opus-4.8-priced-at-half benchmark is the part competitors will feel by Friday.
