A round of 2026 leadership coverage continues to circulate variants of a "300% agent adoption surge in two years" framing aimed at founders and operators planning workforce redesign. The closest sourced number is the MIT Sloan Management Review / BCG joint report — The Emerging Agentic Enterprise (Nov 2025) — which found generative AI achieved 70% adoption in just three years and that in just two years agentic AI has already reached 35% adoption, with another 44% of organizations planning to deploy it soon. The companion BCG announcement frames the same survey. Separately, McKinsey's annual State of AI report covered nearly two-thirds of companies experimenting with AI agents in late 2025 while 88% were using AI in at least one business function (up from 78% in 2024) — yet only one in 10 companies actually scaled their AI agents.

The "300%" figure is a vendor-deck artifact, not a research finding — the actual primary sources describe a near-doubling of intent and a much smaller jump in production deployment, with most of the 44% "planning to deploy" cohort still trapped between pilot and scale. The honest reading of the same data is closer to: agent adoption is wide and shallow, and the gap between "deployed" and "scaled" is the entire story. Operators who build 2026 workforce plans against a tripling are setting a hiring freeze or a redesign mandate against a number that isn't there; operators who build against the 1-in-10 scale rate are calibrated. The category lesson: when the same eye-catching adoption number appears in three vendor blogs and no primary source, it's almost always a forecast collapsed into a fact. Forrester's separate finding — that coding-only AI adoption lifts overall team productivity by less than 10% even when coding itself improves 30-40% — is the same pattern at the workflow level: real gains in narrow stages, very modest gains at the team-output level the CFO actually measures.

If the 44% planning-to-deploy cohort converts within 18 months, the doubling implied by the SMR/BCG data does start to look like a near-tripling on a from-zero baseline — the headline is wrong about today but may be directionally right about late 2027.
