By April, one founder profiled by TIME had replaced HubSpot, Calendly, Vimeo, and DocuSign with custom tools, saving roughly $250,000 a year; his 48-person company was down to 30 employees without losing revenue — "we actually get slightly better results," he said. TIME reports the inflection followed Claude Opus 4.5, released by Anthropic in late November and trained on specialized data that taught it to complete long-running agentic tasks such as software engineering and administrative work . Short-term rental platform Hospitable increased AI spending by 50% — equivalent to three FTEs — and AI agents now generate 90% of the company's code, answer 70% of support queries, help finance reconcile transfers, and run marketing campaigns; the company hasn't made anyone redundant but has reduced hiring, and CEO Pierre-Camille Hamana says the 140-person company would otherwise have needed to triple its 65-person support team.

The interesting line in the TIME reporting isn't the layoffs — it's the substitution pattern. SMBs are replacing software vendors, not just people: HubSpot, Calendly, DocuSign all displaced by a single founder running custom agents. That's a more durable threat to mid-market SaaS than to mid-market labor, because the labor decision is reversible and the software-rewrite isn't. Economists call this phenomenon the "Jevons paradox," named after the English economist who observed, in 1865, that the increasing efficiency of coal use was leading to more coal consumption, rather than less — which is the right frame for Hospitable (more work, fewer hires) but not for the Sonora case (fewer hires, less software spend, similar revenue). One of those is the future; we don't yet know which.
