Meta announced the global launch of Meta Business Agent on Wednesday, an AI agent that fields inquiries, suggests products, schedules appointments, vets leads, and completes transactions across WhatsApp, Instagram, and Messenger. Mark Zuckerberg told the Conversations event in London that "every business, of any size" would get an agent to talk to customers, with the goal that the agent eventually "runs your whole business." Bloomberg confirmed Meta will begin charging some customers Wednesday, and TechCrunch reported that large businesses will pay based on how many tokens the agent consumes — the same metered model the platform layer just adopted for Copilot. Engadget noted pilots in India, Mexico, and Brazil yielded an installed base of more than one million businesses on WhatsApp and Messenger ahead of the global rollout. WhatsApp's paid messaging business already runs at a $2 billion annual revenue run rate.

This is the first time a default-on agent has been priced into the messaging surface where most of the world's SMBs already run their customer conversations — and the pricing model is the actual story. Token-based billing on a chat workload couples the variable cost of customer service to model inflation in a way no SMB has modeled. The companies that win the next two quarters will be the ones who treat Meta's agent the way operators treated Stripe in 2012: install it, instrument it, renegotiate before scale catches them. The ones that lose will be the ones whose CFOs discover in Q4 that the cheap-per-conversation pilot became a six-figure monthly inference bill the moment marketing turned it on for a promotion. The deeper read is what this does to Zendesk, Intercom, and the per-seat CS-SaaS category: when the messaging platform itself ships the agent with native commerce, identity, and transaction primitives, the third-party stack between SMB and customer becomes harder to justify. Meta is making the same move on conversational commerce that Stripe made on online payments — and Stripe didn't lose.
