Exa Labs, a San Francisco-based startup building a search engine tailor-made for the age of artificial intelligence, raised $250 million at a $2.2 billion valuation in a round led by Andreessen Horowitz; the deal more than triples the five-year-old startup's valuation since it raised $85 million at $700 million last fall . The Exa round, landing 24 hours after Google announced the biggest reformulation of Search in its history, is the cleanest signal yet that the AI investing class no longer believes consumer search and agent search are the same product. The valuation math only works if you believe an agent doing 200 queries per task at sub-180ms latency is structurally different from a human typing 3 words — and that Google can't serve both without cannibalizing its ad business. OpenAI can't make Search a priority and Google has an ad business to protect, which could leave room for a smaller lab like Exa or Parallel to carve out a niche . The wedge here is latency and freshness, not relevance: SEO doesn't apply when the customer is a coding agent that needs the right answer first time or it burns tokens looping.
