Two of the world's largest PE firms control thousands of portfolio-company CIOs by default, and Goldman runs the bank that sells most of those companies their next round. Anthropic just bought access to that distribution at $300M — a fraction of what building it organically would cost — and accepted that the JV's incentives will not perfectly align with Anthropic's product roadmap. The structural read is that AI lab unit economics now require renting installed-base relationships, because the enterprise sales cycle does not get faster when your model gets better.

Watch For

When an AI vendor pitches you in the next 90 days, ask whether they're selling you the lab's product or the JV's services arm — and whether those have different margin pools and different data-handling commitments. If the salesperson can't answer cleanly, you're being sold ambiguity. Add that question to your vendor evaluation rubric this week, before two more of these JVs close and the picture gets noisier.
