GPT-Live is built for continuous interaction — instead of processing separate messages, it processes input while generating output and can make interaction decisions many times per second: whether to speak, continue listening, pause, interrupt, or invoke a tool.
At launch, GPT-Live uses GPT-5.5 in the background, and OpenAI will update the delegated model as new frontier models release. Two variants shipped globally Wednesday — GPT-Live-1 for paid tiers and GPT-Live-1 mini as the free default.
More than 150 million people use ChatGPT Voice and Dictation each week; tapping the Voice button now uses the GPT-Live experience. The API is planned but not yet available.

What it means

The interesting fact is the split architecture, not the voice itself. OpenAI has decoupled the real-time conversation layer from reasoning, so voice UX can improve on a different clock from the frontier model behind it — and the "smarts" tier is now something a builder chooses at inference (Instant, Medium, High). For anyone building voice agents, this is the new reference architecture: a cheap always-on duplex layer that delegates to whichever reasoner you can afford. It also quietly resets the competitive frame — ByteDance's Seeduplex and Nvidia's PersonaPlex already shipped full-duplex earlier this year, so this is table stakes for consumer voice AI, not a moat. OpenAI's edge is distribution, not the acoustic model.

Two of today's stories are product launches; three are about who is allowed to ship, buy, or evaluate them. GPT-Live and Grok 4.5 keep the capability curve moving, but the interesting movement is on the perimeter: Brussels turning the AI Act into a procurement pipeline for evaluations, Washington getting an OpenAI principles document that reads as vendor-qualification paperwork, and Beijing writing permission slips for H200 chips to a named shortlist of three labs. The lab-vs-lab race is now second-order to the regime that decides which labs can serve which customers on which continents. The bet not working today is the assumption that a better model wins the market on merit alone; the one working is any team building for the permission layer — evals, structured-access tooling, jurisdictional routing. Considered and passed: OpenAI's SWE-Bench Pro reliability critique (lab self-analysis, needs independent replication) and Zhipu's $4B raise (single WSJ source, investors and use of proceeds not disclosed).
