The details

Google promoted Gemini 3.5 Flash to general availability as its most capable Flash tier, positioned for agentic and coding workflows.
The `gemini-flash-latest` alias now resolves to 3.5 Flash by default — no code change required on the caller side.
Independent benchmark comparisons versus 2.5 Flash and competing low-latency tiers have not yet been published.

What it means

The `-latest` alias is convenience for developers and a silent migration lever for Google. Every team that took the shortcut just accepted a model swap without a regression test — which is fine on a code assistant and less fine on an agent that spends money or writes to a system of record. The right default is a pinned version in production and `-latest` in staging. Cost-per-conversation math also needs a re-run this week; a "Flash" tier is not necessarily still the cheapest option after a GA bump.
