What happened

NVIDIA's Sunday blog post calls its Rubin reference design the first to hit 100% liquid cooling — every chip in a closed loop, no fans. Director Ali Heydari says the DSX design has "zero water consumption." Independent coverage estimates it cuts on-site cooling water from ~2.6M gallons per megawatt a year to near zero in favorable climates.

What it means

The claim's boundary is the rack, not the AI factory. The savings are real for siting fights, but TechCrunch notes they ignore water used in power generation and chip-making. For procurement and ESG teams: Rubin removes the cooling tower as a permitting blocker — it doesn't solve AI's upstream water or power load. Treat any "water-neutral data center" pitch as scoped to the cooling loop.
