On Friday afternoon, the White House called Anthropic, branded Fable 5 and Mythos 5 a "national security threat," and gave the company 90 minutes to disable them; an export-control letter followed Friday evening and the models were taken offline hours later. Anthropic said in a Friday blog post that the directive suspends all access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 by any foreign national, whether inside or outside the United States, including foreign national Anthropic employees. Because the company says it has no way to filter users by nationality in real time, it shut both models down for all customers everywhere; all other Anthropic products, including Claude Opus 4.8, Sonnet, and Haiku, remain online. Three things matter here, and the export-control framing is the smallest of them. First, this is the first time an export-control directive has been used to force a leading AI company to pull a publicly deployed model from its own customers rather than restrict future sales — applying the framework retroactively to a model already running in production looked less like a sales restriction and more like a product recall. Second, the 90-minute window means there is no enterprise contract — no SLA, no notice clause, no force majeure carve-out — that survives this scenario; you cannot procure your way out of it. Third, the precedent now travels. Any frontier model from a US-domiciled lab is one phone call from being shut off for any enterprise customer with a non-citizen on the team — which is to say, all of them. The compliance question stops being "is the vendor SOC 2" and becomes "is the vendor's model in good standing with the White House this week."
