A federal judge in Mississippi sanctioned four attorneys Tuesday after discovering that lawyers on both sides of a lawsuit filed court briefs containing citations to legal cases that did not exist; U.S. District Judge Sharion Aycock issued the order June 8 in a contract dispute between Louisiana attorney Tom Withers III and the City of Aberdeen, Mississippi. The court suspended lead attorneys Kathleen Wilson and Kathryn Williams from practicing in the Northern District of Mississippi for two years and fined Wilson $2,500 and Williams $3,500; local counsel Shauncey Hunter Ridgeway and Mark McClinton, who did not directly prepare the disputed filings, were each fined $1,000 and removed from the lawsuit. Wilson admitted using an AI tool called "First Drafts" to draft entire briefings and kept using AI even after the judge identified hallucinated cases; Williams used an AI research tool designed for in-house work, not Mississippi law.
