AWS launched Amazon Bedrock AgentCore Payments in preview, enabling AI agents to autonomously access and pay for APIs, MCP servers, web content, and other agents, built in partnership with Coinbase and Stripe as the first managed payment capabilities purpose-built for autonomous agents . The system runs on the x402 protocol, with settlement in about 200 milliseconds on Base with USDC, at less than a fraction of a cent per transaction . The AWS weekly roundup on May 11 made it the lead item. The Coinbase x402 Bazaar MCP server is available through AgentCore Gateway, providing over 10,000 x402 endpoints that agents can search, discover, and pay for autonomously.

Pay attention to what is not in this announcement: there is no human-in-the-loop step. Spending limits are enforced deterministically at the infrastructure layer, and every transaction is observable through the same logs, metrics, and traces developers already use in AgentCore. That sentence is the entire story — AWS just relocated agent spending governance from the application layer (where every team builds their own brittle approval workflow) to the cloud layer (where it's a config field). The losers here are not Stripe and Coinbase; they got pre-integration. The losers are the dozens of "agentic commerce" Series A startups whose entire wedge was payment orchestration. AWS just made that a checkbox.
