Overview
Contract review is one of the highest-volume tasks in legal practice. This workflow uses Claude AI to accelerate first-pass review — identifying risk clauses, missing provisions, and deviations from standard terms — so attorneys can focus on judgment calls.
Steps
- Prepare your playbook: Define your standard positions on key clauses (indemnification, limitation of liability, IP ownership, termination, governing law).
- Upload the contract: Feed the full contract text to Claude. For best results, paste the text rather than uploading a PDF.
- Run risk extraction: Prompt Claude to identify and categorize all risk-bearing clauses, rating each as high/medium/low risk with specific language citations.
- Compare to your playbook: Ask Claude to flag deviations from your standard positions, noting what's missing and what's non-standard.
- Generate redline suggestions: Have Claude draft alternative language for flagged clauses, aligned with your preferred positions.
What you'll learn
- How to structure prompts for legal document analysis
- Building a reusable contract review playbook for AI
- When AI review is sufficient vs. when attorney judgment is required
