Claude Duet for founders: a background agent worth the waitlist?

What it is

Claude Duet is a standalone app from Anthropic where Claude runs as a proactive agent in the background. Anthropic on October 21, 2026 opened a research preview of Claude Duet, an app the company said turns Claude into a proactive agent that surfaces items needing attention, completes requested tasks, keeps working when users step away, and checks in before taking consequential actions. It sends a short brief each morning on important items from connected apps, then checks apps every few hours and sends an alert when something needs attention.

The next-work-session test

Concrete scenario: you're a founder running a Monday pipeline review. You connect Gmail, HubSpot, and Slack, then tell Duet to flag any inbound from a top-20 account that's gone 48+ hours without a reply and draft a response. Overnight, it drafts. Morning brief lands. You approve, edit, or kill. What changes: the "who did I forget to get back to" scan — usually 20 minutes of inbox archaeology — becomes a review-and-approve step. That's the honest delta. Not autonomy, triage.

Pricing

No separate Duet charge during the preview. Claude Duet has no standalone fee and is included in Claude Pro at $20 monthly, or $17 per month billed annually, and Claude Max starting at $100 monthly for US users. The catch: Claude Duet pricing is $0 on top of Pro or Max, but its background checks draw from your shared usage limit. So the real cost is message budget, not a line item. Access is gated — it's a waitlisted research preview for Pro and Max subscribers in the US.

What we'd actually use it for

Narrower than the pitch. Vendor demos show it building dashboards and web apps unattended. For a founder in week-to-week GTM mode, the realistic win is a standing watch on three or four signals:

  • Inbound from named target accounts (HubSpot + Gmail).
  • Slack mentions in #sales or #customers you missed.
  • Calendar prep — pulling the last thread and CRM notes for tomorrow's meetings into one doc.

That's the leverage: offloading the "check everything in case something's on fire" loop. The "build me a dashboard overnight" use case is real but less repeatable — most founders don't need a new dashboard weekly.

Limits

The honest part. Anthropic described the release as an early build and warned the agent "still might misread a thread or miscalibrate what's urgent." Translation: expect false alarms and missed signals for the first few weeks of tuning. Approval gates are strict by design — Claude Duet reads, drafts, and prepares work on its own, but before it sends a message, makes a payment, signs a document, or deletes anything, it shows the user exactly what it is about to do and waits for approval. A few actions are off-limits even with approval, including trading securities and moving money between accounts. Good for safety, but it means Duet is not "set and forget" for anything that actually commits you.

Two more things worth knowing. There's no team-level control — this is a personal-account tool today, so if you're an operator managing a GTM team, you can't deploy it as shared infrastructure. And background checks consume your plan's usage, so an over-eager watchlist can quietly eat your Pro quota. Errands from personal life, like booking tickets, remain a weaker area in the preview.

Try it if

  • You're on Pro or Max already and the marginal cost is just waitlist patience.
  • Your week is dominated by monitoring work — pipeline, inbox triage, account health — rather than deep building.
  • You already have Gmail / Slack / HubSpot / Stripe connected to Claude and trust its tool use.
  • You want to run a two-week experiment on delegating morning triage before committing a hire or VA to it.

Skip it if

  • You need team or org-level admin control today. The lack of an admin console is a dealbreaker for most operators managing GTM staff.
  • Your workflows are regulated or involve money movement — the approval gates will slow you down more than they help, and some actions are blocked outright.
  • You're outside the US or on a Team/Enterprise plan — you're not eligible for the preview.
  • You're hoping to replace a chief of staff. This is a triage layer, not a judgment layer. For a founder's bet, that distinction matters.
