What it is

An open-source reference implementation from Anthropic for building shopping and merchant agents on Claude. Anthropic open-sourced Claude Commerce Agents on September 3, 2026 — a blueprint for building shopping and merchant agents on Claude, with reference implementations spanning retail, travel, telecom, and entertainment. It's a code scaffold you fork and wire into your own stack — not a product you log into. The code is on GitHub under Apache 2.0.

The next-work-session test

You're a marketing lead planning Q4 CTV spend. The Adweek write-up is the reason this is on your desk: Rouge Care spent $25,000 on CTV ads and drove over $125,000 in attributable sales for an awareness campaign that ran in the second quarter of 2026, according to Samuel Bonneau, senior copywriter at Rouge Care. Note whose claim that is — one brand's copywriter, one campaign, self-reported attribution.

Does the blueprint change your next session? Only if you have engineering. The deliverable this week is: brief your dev team to fork the repo, pick the retail reference agent, and pilot it against one narrow task — say, generating and pushing shoppable product feeds. You are not "letting AI buy your ads" by Friday.

Pricing

The blueprint itself is free. Reference implementations across retail, travel, telecom and ticketing, with live demos and a self-guided demo before you write any code. Deployable via the Claude API, Amazon Bedrock, Microsoft Foundry, Google Cloud Vertex AI, or as a Claude Code plugin.

Your real cost is Claude API tokens. Sonnet 5 is the mid-tier sweet spot, strong coding and reasoning at much lower cost ($3/$15 standard, $2/$10 introductory through Aug 31, 2026). Agentic loops burn tokens fast — one campaign-planning run can chew through millions of tokens across tool calls, so budget accordingly. Media agencies are already treating this as a line item: Media agencies are building audit logs and daily to… meter agent spend by the token.

What we'd actually use it for

Narrow, boring, useful: a merchant agent that drafts campaign briefs against your product catalog, or a shopping agent embedded in your own site that answers "what do I need for X" and hands off to your existing checkout. Anthropic launched a blueprint that lets any retailer build an AI shopping agent on Claude. Checkout stays with retailers and partners.

For pipeline work: point the merchant agent at your CRM and product data to generate segmented outreach drafts — with a human approving every send.

Limits

  • Not a media-buying product. The Rouge Care case used custom agents against DSPs; the Anthropic blueprint doesn't ship a CTV buyer. You'd build that integration.
  • It's a starting point, not a solution. Anthropic open-sourced Claude Commerce Agents as scaffolding — the skills, guardrails, and merchant-side connections are on you.
  • Attribution stays hard. The 5x return is one brand's self-report from one quarter. Treat it as a signal, not a benchmark.
  • Payments are out of scope. Anthropic launched a blueprint that lets any retailer build an AI shopping agent on Claude. Checkout stays with retailers and partners.
  • Engineering-gated. If you don't have dev capacity or a friendly platform partner, this is a slide, not a tool.

Try it if

  • You have engineering resources and an existing product catalog / commerce stack (Shopify teams have a head start — see the Shopify examples repo).
  • You want to prototype a merchant-side agent (campaign drafts, catalog Q&A, internal ops) before betting on a vendor.
  • You're comfortable metering token spend and running an audit log on every agent action.
  • You want to evaluate the underlying skills pattern — fork the anthropics/commerce-agents repo and read the code.

Skip it if

  • You expected a plug-and-play "AI buys my TV ads" button. That's not what shipped.
  • You have no dev partner and no platform (Shopify, Bedrock, Vertex) already in place.
  • Your Q4 plan can't absorb a 4–8 week build-and-test cycle before any campaign impact.
  • You were sold on the 5x number. One case study, one quarter, one attribution model — build your own baseline before you brief the CFO.
