What it is

A pair of admin-console features inside ChatGPT Enterprise — not a new product, just plumbing the platform should have shipped a year ago. OpenAI introduces new spend controls and usage analytics for ChatGPT Enterprise, helping organizations manage costs and scale AI with confidence. On the controls side, admins can set a default limit for their ChatGPT Enterprise workspace, configure limits for specific groups, and create individual overrides for people who need more capacity. Employees can see their credit usage against their available budget, request additional credits when needed, and include context about what they're working on so admins can make an informed decision. Limits run on a rolling weekly basis with either soft alerts or hard caps.

The Monday-morning test

You run AI transformation at a Big Four practice with 4,000 ChatGPT Enterprise seats across five service lines. Last quarter, Tax burned through credits running deep research on M&A targets while Audit barely logged in — and you had no defensible way to chargeback either group. Monday morning, you open the admin console, set a workspace default, give Strategy & Transactions a higher group ceiling, and pull a usage report for the partner meeting at 10am. That's a real change. Before this, your "governance" was a quarterly invoice and a spreadsheet built from SSO logs.

Pricing

The features themselves are included in ChatGPT Enterprise — no separate SKU surfaced in the announcement or press coverage. ChatGPT Enterprise pricing is not published. Industry reporting puts it at roughly $60 per user per month with a 150-seat minimum and annual contract, though OpenAI doesn't publish a sticker price — every contract is negotiated directly. Treat any per-seat figure as a third-party estimate, not an OpenAI quote. Pricing on the underlying credit consumption (deep research, Codex, image generation) is what these new controls actually govern.

What we'd actually use it for

Three honest jobs:

Chargeback defense. Producing a per-team, per-month consumption number you can hand finance without writing a Python script against the API logs.

Pilot-to-rollout gates. Capping a 200-seat pilot at $X/week so a runaway agent workflow can't blow the quarterly budget before you notice.

Power-user triage. The credit-request workflow gives you a paper trail for who needs Pro-tier features and why — useful when a partner asks why their associate got denied.

Limits

The analytics tell you that spend happened, not whether it was worth it. OpenAI has introduced spend controls and enhanced usage analytics for ChatGPT Enterprise to enable organizations to monitor AI adoption, track consumption across teams, and set budgets for AI usage. But, analysts cautioned, it still can't show how those costs lead to business benefits. Translation: no ROI attribution, no productivity benchmarking, no link from a deep-research run to a billable engagement. You'll still build that layer yourself in Snowflake or whatever your finance team uses.

Also worth noting: limits are weekly, not daily or monthly, which is awkward if your fiscal cadence is monthly. Group definitions ride on your existing SCIM/SSO groups — if your IdP groupings don't match your cost-center structure, you have a directory hygiene project before this becomes useful. And nothing here covers the API, Codex outside ChatGPT, or Azure OpenAI consumption, which for most consulting firms is a meaningful chunk of total OpenAI spend.

Try it if

  • You manage a ChatGPT Enterprise deployment of 500+ seats and finance is asking pointed questions
  • You're running a department-by-department rollout and need budget guardrails per wave
  • You've had at least one "who authorized this?" conversation about deep-research or Codex consumption
  • Your IdP groups already map cleanly to cost centers

Skip it if

  • You're on ChatGPT Business or Team — this is Enterprise-only
  • Your AI spend lives mostly on the API or Azure OpenAI (different consoles, different problem)
  • You need real ROI attribution, not just consumption metering — buy a FinOps tool instead
  • You haven't yet cleaned up your SSO groups; this will surface that mess before it solves anything

For consulting and enterprise IT leads, this is a competence floor, not a competitive edge. It closes a governance gap that should never have been open. Use it, but don't let anyone on the steering committee mistake "we have spend controls now" for "we have an AI strategy."
