Google I/O keynote today: Gemini agentic AI, Android XR glasses expected

Google's annual developer conference starts at 10 AM PT today (May 19). Expect updates to Gemini with agentic features, Android XR smart glasses progress, and new smart home hardware.

Our Take

Google is announcing AI features that competitors have already shipped; the real story is whether it ships actual hardware this year or just more prototypes.

Why it matters

Agentic AI tools like Claude Code have momentum. Google's Gemini updates will signal how seriously it is pursuing task automation in search and Android. Hardware availability matters because prototype demos do not ship products.

Google's keynote address today will focus on Gemini and hardware

Google I/O runs today, May 19, with the keynote at 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET. The livestream is available on Google's YouTube channel and the official Google I/O site. The keynote typically runs two hours.

The company is expected to announce a new version of Gemini with agentic AI capabilities—task automation tools similar to Claude Code. Google previewed this direction at the Android Show with "Gemini Intelligence," which includes wider task automation features and custom widget generation. Those same kinds of updates could extend to Search and Google's other services at I/O.

Beyond software, Google is due to update the Google Home speakers it announced last year. Recent reports indicate Walmart is preparing its own Gemini smart home speaker, suggesting third-party hardware support may expand.

On hardware, Android XR remains a major question mark. The Verge tested prototype Android XR smart glasses at last year's I/O, but no shipping product has launched yet. Google announced smart glasses partnerships at that time. Samsung's Galaxy Glasses, rumored to run Android XR, may appear at I/O, though Samsung is also expected to reserve them for its July Galaxy Unpacked event. The Galaxy Glasses are designed to be display-free, similar to Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses.

Agentic AI is no longer novel; shipping matters now

Claude Code and other agentic tools have gained traction over several months. Google's Gemini updates will clarify whether the company is ready to ship comparable automation features into its largest surfaces (Search, Android, Smart Home) or if these remain experimental.

Hardware is the other test. Prototype smart glasses are expected tech conference fare. Actual availability—or a concrete ship date—would signal real intent. The Android XR ecosystem has had a year since last I/O. If Google or its partners (Samsung, others) still show only prototypes, the narrative shifts from hardware momentum to hardware stall.

Set a reminder to record the keynote if you can't watch live

The keynote runs two hours and will likely include both software and hardware announcements. A recording will be available on Google's YouTube channel and the I/O site afterward, so you can skip straight to the segments relevant to your stack (Gemini, Android, Search, Smart Home) without sitting through the full address.
