Google assembles a new coding team as Claude outpaces Gemini
Google DeepMind is mounting a direct response to its coding AI deficit ahead of its annual I/O developer conference starting tomorrow in Mountain View, California. The company has formed a new AI coding team and recruited John Jumper, the 2024 Nobel laureate in chemistry who shared the prize with DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis for AlphaFold work, to lead the effort (per The Information and Los Angeles Times reporting).
The timing reflects an acute internal problem. Internal DeepMind engineers have been requesting access to Anthropic's Claude Code over Google's own offerings because the gap in capability is so wide that it affects their own productivity. Multiple sources report engineers competing for limited Claude seats rather than defaulting to Gemini-based tools. Google is widely expected to announce a major coding release at I/O, possibly an update to its Antigravity agentic coding platform.
Coding has become the primary battleground for foundation model dominance
A year ago, at Google I/O 2025, distinguishing between top-tier large language models felt like subjective splits. Today, that's changed. Coding capability has become the metric by which foundation models are ranked and adopted. Claude and OpenAI's Codex are so dramatically superior to Google's offerings that the company has effectively lost credibility in a category where developer trust directly translates to enterprise adoption.
Google still leads in adjacent areas: AI for science (the only frontier AI company with a Nobel Prize), health tools like the AI Health Coach launching this week, and systems like AlphaEvolve for mathematical discovery. But none of those advantages matter if developers won't use the base models.
Don't expect a credible rival to Claude in 48 hours
A conference announcement, no matter how polished, cannot substitute for months of production iteration and user feedback. The fact that Google's own engineers were still fighting over Claude access last month, despite having access to internal models substantially ahead of public releases, is the strongest signal that external announcements are unlikely to close the gap by next week.
Practitioners should watch for two signals: whether Google announces specific benchmarks against Claude and OpenAI models (and independent verification of those benchmarks), and whether the company opens a public beta for early feedback. Absence of either would suggest the release is positioning for future credibility rather than immediate replacement. The company's separate push into health and science AI may be the more defensible play in the near term.
