Elation Health acquires Aster to fold voice AI into clinic operations

Elation Health announced the acquisition of Aster, a women's health-focused EHR startup founded in 2023. Aster's core product is Atlas, a voice AI agent designed to automate front-office clinic tasks. The deal brings Aster's cofounders Fifi Kara and Dr. Lailah Kara-Newton, plus CTO Nacho Vazquez, into Elation's engineering organization.

Aster has raised $2.8 million to date (company-reported), including a $2.4 million pre-seed round from Zeal Capital Partners, Cornerstone Ventures, and Octopus Ventures. Elation Health, based in California, supplies cloud EHRs, telehealth, patient engagement, and revenue-cycle management tools to primary-care practices. In 2022, Elation raised $50 million in Series D funding, bringing its lifetime raise to $108.5 million (per reporting). The company acquired billing and practice-management firm Lightning MD in 2023.

Kyna Fong, Elation's cofounder and CEO, stated the acquisition reflects shared mission: "Like Elation, Aster was founded by siblings with a personal mission to fix healthcare. It was clear right away they would significantly add to our capabilities."

Clinic software is consolidating around all-in-one stacks, not point solutions

Elation's acquisition pattern reveals a structural shift in primary-care software economics. Single-tool vendors (billing software, scheduling, note-taking) are under margin pressure; integrated suites that reduce manual handoffs are what practices now buy. Elation earlier this year embedded Anthropic's Claude into its Clinical Insights tool to summarize patient longitudinal data for providers. Now it is bolting on front-office voice automation via Aster.

The strategy mirrors what Health Tech incumbents have pursued for a decade: acquire specialist teams, retain their product, rebrand it as a module, and sell the combined offering to existing customers. For Elation, Atlas becomes a voice layer on top of its EHR. For Aster's investors and founders, the exit is a acquihire in a pre-revenue or early-revenue stage. What to expect and what remains uncertain

Practices considering Elation should clarify the shipping timeline and scope for Atlas integration. A voice agent for check-in, appointment confirmation, or prior-authorization follow-up has different ROI than one that routes complex calls to humans. Vendor messaging often conflates the two. Ask Elation which tasks Atlas will actually handle in your workflow and by what quarter the feature ships in production.

Also audit whether Atlas will integrate with existing phone systems and patient data flows. Voice AI in healthcare also carries compliance risk: call recording consent, HIPAA logging, and data retention policies differ by state. Before migrating to Elation for this capability, confirm with Elation's legal team that your jurisdiction and call types are covered.
