AI uploads surge to 75,000 daily tracks on major platforms
AI-generated music uploads have exploded since Suno launched in December 2023 and Udio in April 2024. On Deezer, AI tracks grew from 28% of uploads in September 2025 to 34% by year-end, reaching 75,000 daily uploads (company-reported). Spotify removed 75 million spam tracks in 12 months.
Deezer implemented the first major detection system, automatically identifying and demonetizing 85% of AI music streams. The platform prevents its algorithm from recommending AI content. Apple Music launched voluntary Transparency Tags requiring self-reporting. Spotify partnered with DistroKid for AI credits that specify whether AI generated lyrics, vocals, or backing music.
Only Bandcamp banned AI music outright, though enforcement relies on manual user reports rather than automated scanning. Google requires labeling on YouTube platforms but won't detail its detection methods.
User rejection meets industry resistance to filtering
Public sentiment runs strongly against AI music. A Deezer/Ipsos study found 51% believe AI creates low-quality, generic music. The Hollywood Reporter survey showed 66% never knowingly listen to AI-generated tracks, and 52% would avoid their favorite artists if they used AI assistance.
Despite this rejection, AI music consumption remains minimal. On Deezer, AI tracks account for just 1% of streams as of April (up from 0.5% in November). However, 85% of AI music streams are fraudulent, up from 70% earlier.
The disconnect is clear: 45% of users want to filter out all AI music (per Deezer/Ipsos), but no streaming service offers this option. Manual Moussallam, Deezer's Director of Research, expects uploads to keep increasing despite low legitimate demand.
Voluntary systems create enforcement gaps
Current industry approaches rely heavily on self-reporting. Apple's system requires labels to voluntarily add metadata tags. Spotify works with standards group DDEX to create labeling protocols, but adoption across the industry remains inconsistent.
Detection technology still produces material errors according to Spotify's Sam Duboff. Companies hesitate to implement strict penalties partly because they expect AI to become standard in music production. Top Nashville songwriters and hip-hop producers already incorporate AI tools behind the scenes.
The scale problem persists: Suno users generate "an entire Spotify's worth of AI slop every two weeks" according to the analysis. Without industry-wide automated detection and consistent labeling standards, platforms face an arms race between AI music generators and their filtering capabilities.
